ByronHet Nederlands Byron Genootschap

The Dutch Byron Society

Annual report 2005

On 19 April 1975 the Nederlands Byron Genootschap was founded by professor Wim Aerts, the first chairman of the society, and Gerlof Janzen M.D. who succeeded his predecessor some twenty years later. So in 2005 the thirtiest anniversary was celebrated. This took place on 17 September with a guest speech from Kees Snoek, lecturer of Dutch literature at the Sorbonne and biographer of one of the Netherlands' most important writers of the Interbellum, Edgar Du Perron, and chairman of the society dedicated to him. The lecture was titled 'Du Perron, Byron and Lermontov' and emphasized the international focus of Du Perron.

On this meeting Gerlof Janzen stepped down as chairman. Gerlof Janzen, who has published translations of Oscar Wilde, John Keats, P.B. Shelley, Walter Pater and William Beckford, was honoured by dr. Hong In Thio for his important meaning for and longtime dedication to the society. Mr. Janzen was appointed honorary member, and is succeeded by dr. Thio.

In July 2005 the Nieuwsbrief (newsletter) of the Nederlands Byron Genootschap was published. It contains articles by Walter P. Verschueren on the Dutch 19th century essayist Conrad Busken Huet and Byron's Don Juan, 'Schumann's Manfred' by Marry Christ, Peter de Rijk on Boudewijn Büch, Goethe and Byron and 'Quel Giuda di Parnasso, Vincenzo Monti and Byron' by Eric de Ree.
